Sidney Poitier

By: Cece Hymes

Sidney Poitier was a Bahamian actor, film director and diplomat. He was the first black actor and first Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. He received two competitive Golden Globe Awards, a competitive British Academy of Film and Television Arts award, and a Grammy Award for Best spoken word Album.  Here are some movies he played in:

·         The Last BrickMaker America

·         Free of Eden

·         The Jackal

·         Mandela and de Klerk

·         Brother John

·         In the Heat of the Night

·         No Way Out

Sidney Poitier will always be remembered as someone who broke down Hollywood’s racial barriers. Did you know he lied about his age in order to serve the country during World War II? He also has a book. If you check it out let me know how you like it. I haven’t had a chance to read it. Here are some of his favorite quotes:

·         “I am the me I choose to be”

·         “A person doesn’t have to change who he is to become better”

·         “You don’t have to become something you’re not to be better than you were”

·         “So much of life, it seems, is determined by pure randomness”

He was a great Actor and left us with some great films. We are thankful for what he left behind for us to treasure. What are some of your special moments of Sidney Poitier? What was your favorite film with him in it? Also make sure  to follow me @Cece.Atl
