  • Coretta Scott King

Coretta Scott King was a trailblazer for civil rights and an advocate for justice and equality. She was born in 1927 in Alabama and later attended Antioch College, where she became involved in the civil rights movement. She met Martin Luther King Jr. while studying in Boston and the two were married in 1953.

Coretta played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement, supporting her husband’s work and even leading her own efforts for justice and equality. After Martin’s assassination in 1968, she continued to be a prominent voice for civil rights, founding the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta and advocating for causes such as voting rights, LGBTQ rights, and anti-apartheid efforts.

Coretta’s legacy extends far beyond her activism, however. She was also an accomplished musician and author, and she worked tirelessly to promote peace and understanding between people of different backgrounds. Her commitment to justice and equality is an inspiration to us all, and her contributions to the civil rights movement will never be forgotten.

In the words of Coretta Scott King herself, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” Let us all strive to embody her compassion and commitment to justice in our own lives.
