Interview with Shawny
By: Where It Begins
Q. What made you want to be a DJ?
A. I really got my start in college. I was the co-host to a radio mixer and personality named Y. Dot. He had a drive time show on our college station, WANM 90.5 on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. I would just watch him mix on a software program called Virtual DJ. I would sit in the studio and think to myself “I can do that”! So, one day I downloaded the program, asked him for some music and I began practicing.
Q. What differentiate you from the rest of the DJ’s?
A. I PRACTICE. Even after I mastered the skill. I still practice and take the time to sharpen my skills. I’m also HUGE on my blends and transitions. For a long time, that’s all I worked on creating different ways to transition from song to song so that it never sounds like a train wreck. Of course, I’m human! Sometimes I do mess up (lol) or can just be moving too fast, but I genuinely love my craft and I think it shows. You can really tell who’s having fun and who’s just there to be there.
Q. How would you define your “Style” or approach to providing DJ Entertainment?
A. I study the crowd, I am always thinking about how I want to set the vibe and what’s going to be my first song. I’m also from Florida… I talk on the microphone! Also, one thing I’ve learned from being in ATL is that they don’t give the DJ a chance to rock the mic. They hire a host and a DJ and then they want us to work together when really, I’m my own show.
Q. Who or what Influenced you to be a DJ?
A. Radio…. Being just a personality is actually very boring.
Q. What are your goals in the next 5 years?
A. Syndicated radio or just radio full-time, more traveling—I really want my craft to allow me to see the world while doing what I love. I want to learn more of the business side as well. I’ll also possibly produce a record and learn how to make beats.

Q. A Wedding
I can remember going to one of my boss weddings and my ex went with me. He got drunk OMG he was loud, spilled drink on the table, flirting with the bartender it was so embarrassing. We rode with my supervisor and her boyfriend. So, when we got back in the car my ex went to sleep and was snoring so loud I was so embarrassed. By the time we got to my car he had to throw up and everything.
When I went to work that morning, everyone was picking on me it was crazy it was fun jokes but that was an embarrassing moment I had at a wedding.

Though it may not be comfortable, adversity teaches you resilience and courage. It teaches you to hold on tightly to what matters most and to surrender what doesn’t. It is the anchor to humanity that prevents you from flying too far, too fast, and scorching yourself on the sun. For all the beauty in life– and life is indeed beautiful- you still need the balance of adversity to grow stronger, so you can live a more meaningful life.
An exercise in understanding yourself
What words do you need to hear right now? Write them down. What do you love about who you are? Write it down. What lessons have you learned from the challenges you’ve overcome? Keep writing. You have the power to give yourself what you need in any moment. Remind yourself of your own resilience, greatness, and power. Who better to teach you how extraordinary you are than you.

Day 20
Q. The stupidest thing you ever did?
One day someone broke into my house and to make a long story short we got to tussling and stuff. He ran out the side door and I chased him. Looking back, that was the stupidest thing I ever did. I could have gotten hurt or killed. I don’t know what made me chase him. Just glad things weren’t worse.

Q. You and the Internet?
A. I am on the Internet for marketing and branding. I do post a lot. I don’t care if I get no likes or even 100 likes I share. Someone is watching and I know that my post on the internet touches some people. My goal is to inspire and encourage others. That’s me and the internet.
Lili Washington
Ceo of YBLIMITED
By: Where It Begins
Q. What made you start YBLimited?
A. YBLimited Mobile Services (Why-Be-Limited) was formed in 2013 with simply 1 bag of makeup and 1 camera. In the beginning, we were just known as YBLimited. Since then, we have evolved into an all-inclusive, mobile one-stop- shop for beauty and fashion, making us the first and only all inclusive Mobile Glam Squad in the country.
Q. Where do you see yourself in five years?
A. I will retire as a makeup artist and remain focused solely on running YBLimited. I’ll be doing a few T.V. productions highlighting my team. I’ll complete my autobiography and work on my philanthropic efforts.
Q. Do you do things for the community?
A. I most definitely do things for the community. That’s my favorite part of being in the position I’m in. I get to help people feel better about themselves using my gifts and the gifts of my team. I am currently an advisor for a non-profit organization called Our Children’s Story. They help families caring for loved ones with special needs receive the services they need to make their lives more comfortable.
