  • The Last 5 Books I Read: Romance, Twists & Real Talk 📚💫

Hey book besties! You know I’m always knee-deep in a good book—whether I’m chilling at home, in between events, or even on a quick getaway. Reading is my reset. It keeps me inspired, lets me escape, and takes me on a new journey with every page.

Every year, I do a reading challenge with a goal of hitting 65 books by December. Right now, I’m at 44 books, and I’m feeling confident I’ll reach (and maybe even surpass!) my goal. 🙌🏽

So let’s talk about the last 5 books I read—some hits, a miss, and a whole lot of feelings.

    1. The Crash by Freida McFadden
Y’all already know Freida McFadden is that girl when it comes to thrillers with wild plot twists. The Crash had me guessing, flipping pages, and side-eyeing characters the whole way through. If you love suspense, secrets, and surprises, you need this one in your life. I’ve read several of her books, and she never lets me down.

    2. The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins
Now, let’s keep it real. I was excited about this one because I loved her book The 5 Second Rule. That one truly changed the way I approach hesitation. But The Let Them Theory just didn’t do it for me. I couldn’t fully connect. Maybe it just wasn’t the right season for this read. Still love Mel, but this one wasn’t my favorite.

    3. Just Our Luck by Denise Williams
This book was everything I needed. A beautiful love story that gave me butterflies, smiles, and warm fuzzies. Denise Williams knows how to write romance that feels real and heartfelt. If you’re into second chances, chemistry, and charming characters, this one is a must-read.

    4. All the Missing Pieces by Catherine Cowles
First time reading Catherine Cowles—and I’m so glad I picked this up. It was suspenseful but still had depth, emotion, and a bit of that romantic pull I love. She kept me engaged, and now I’m looking into what to read next from her. Definitely a name to watch in the romantic suspense space.

    5. Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry
Emily Henry does it again! I absolutely adore her books, and this one gave me all the feels. Her signature blend of romance, humor, and heart is exactly what I needed. I laughed, I swooned, and I didn’t want it to end. If you’re a fan of love stories with charm and personality, this one’s for you.

  • Before I let Go (Book)

    Book: Before I Let Go

    Author: Kennedy Ryan

    By: Cece Hymes

This book was awesome. I loved it. I like a good love story. This book was about a couple Yasmen and Josiah who had been together for years. They were married with three kids. They loved and always had a great attraction to each other. Then they had a couple of deaths in the family and lost themselves. Yasmen went into a depression and had a dark place. She got out of her Marriage and got a divorce.

It’s been two years since they were separated but the two are still co-parenting and love their kids no matter what. They share a business together and still do all that together while being separated. They learn to get along. Yasmen has therapy and is getting back to her normal self and even getting better with her feelings and communication.

Josiah decides it’s time to date and move on, so he starts seeing a lady that works at the job. No matter what Yasmen and Josiah still are in love with each other and fight the feelings they have for each other. They really can’t see each other with other people. They try to work through their feelings while trying to move on. They both realize that they are just not ready to date anyone else.

I don’t want to give away the book but what I really like about the book is the love they have for one another and how they put their kids first in everything that they do. They talk things out together. That’s how real Co-Parenting works. I also love that therapy can be a blessing to people and it’s never too early to get help.

I loved this book if you love a love story and seeing real-life struggles in it. This is the book for you. It has some sad and humorous parts in it.

    Q. What or who inspired you to do fashion and be an author?

    A. When I was in high school, I was inspired by a lot of the new decade designs. Coming into the early 2000s there were a lot of new trends popping. There was always a hot book being passed around. I just wanted to be a part of Triple Crown Publications.

There is always an issue finding either small clothes or larger clothes that are stylish. So, I decided to hand make my own. Something that would continue to make me and the rest of the world unique.

    Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

    A. A designer in DC and/or New York Fashion week!! And I will speak it into existence until I am there.

  • Good Morning, Love

    Book: Good Morning, Love

    Author: Ashley M. Coleman

    By: Cece Hymes

This book was a good book. It was about a girl named “Carli” who works as an illustrious media agency with her musical dreams. She is also a writer. She writes music that’s always been her dream. Her dad is a big-time musician, but she doesn’t want to use her dad’s name. She wanted people to know how creative and how good her own talent was. She was the writer on this other guy project with one of her friends. She ends up meeting Tau Anderson, a rising star reminiscent of a young usher.

Now Tau could get anyone he wanted as a young star in the music industry, but he thought Carli was cute and liked what she did. At first “Carli” gave him a hard time and showed no interest. That just made him want her more; he was up for the challenge. He liked her because she was different, she was not out there, she worked, had talent and was not a gold digger.

Then you have Dylan who “Carli” has been working with her friend Red and Dylan is really into “Carli” but she didn’t realize it until she already was into Tau. Dylan gets jealous but they work out some problems.

Carli tries to keep everything in control, but she has a lot going on with work, this new relationship, the group, and things with her parents and more. She just was tired of everyone controlling her life and that she wants to make her own decision. She jumps out on faith with Love and her passion. Even with all the negative talk from everyone she makes her choice. I think she was really bold and strong. I loved her character and I loved how she worked things out.  She goes through a lot of other things in the book, but you just have to read it to see.

Things come to you in its own timing, and you just sometimes have to jump out there on faith. Stay consistent and follow your dreams.

  • Our Gen Book by Diane Mckinney-Whetstone

    Book: Our Gen

    Author: Diane Mckinney-Whetstone

    By: Cece Hymes

This book was pretty good. It was about 3 Ladies Tish, Cynthia, and Lavia. They all had a past that they were not trying to share. They wanted to keep their secrets but still found themselves boding like sisterhood. Cynthia moved to the Gen she didn’t want to give up her old house and start somewhere new but she did for her family. Tish changed her name because of the embarrassment she heard about her dad. Tavia was holding back her culture and where she was from.

These 3 ladies became friends. They meet up regularly and smoke, line dance and debate on things. The gen in where they live becomes the catalyst for secrets to be exposed. They also had a friend Bloc which also had deep secrets that he needed to share. Bloc was into Tish and Cynthia. When he looked at Cynthia it was different. It was like she reminded him of ways like his mom for him to come out and tell the truth. He just wanted to be honest with her.

It was crazy that Cynthia’s past can be relatable to Trish’s past, and they don’t even know. They all help each other in different ways to share their secrets so that they can deal with them. It’s nothing like finding great friends and having a bond. Friends can have bad times, happy times, sad times and fun times. It shows all that with these groups of friends.

  • Let Love Rule Book by Lenny Kravitz with David Ritz

    Book: Let Love Rule

Author: Lenny Kravitz with David Ritz

    By: CeCe Hymes

I love reading people’s life stories on how they got to where they are today. The struggles, the experiences, and the journey. It motivates me that I can do anything I put my mind to. This Book was about Lenny Kravitz’s life. Starting from a child to a musician.

I knew who Lenny Kravitz was, but I did not know much about who he was. Everyone has a story to tell. This book tells how he was raised in a mixed family and how he never gave up. He went through a lot with his family and growing up. He never let his dream and passion go. He went through times where he slept in his car, on floors and more. He had a good support system also and that’s always a good thing. When you have people pushing and believing in your work. This comes from “We Got to Let Love Rule”.

Love is gentle as a rose

And love can conquer any war

It’s time to take a stand

    Brothers and Sisters join hands

We got to let love rule

Love transcends all space and time

And love can make a little child smile

Can’t you see this won’t go wrong

But we got to be strong

    We can’t do it alone

We got to let love rule

  • The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa

    Book: The Worst Best Man

    Author: Mia Sosa

    By: Cece Hymes

I love a good Romance book. This book was good. It was about a Lady that goes by Lina and a guy named Max. Lina was engaged to be married to Max’s brother Andrew and things didn’t work out. She was a wedding planner and was going after this job. Come to find out she would have to work with Max. She was being rude at first thinking of the past but working together she learned a lot about Max. He pushed her in so many ways and also got her to open up and get things off her chest.

It was like so many wrongs to be with your ex-fiancé brother but so many rights when it came to a good man, a man that’s worth keeping, a man that makes you feel things you don’t want to feel. They both want one thing but are scared in so many ways. They are always looking to please everyone else before they please themselves.

The book was flirty, steamy, funny and shows you to be yourself.  I love great reads and can’t wait to read another book by this author. I also like romances that always start off rough but end well. It’s always the ones you don’t want to be attractive too but the ones that are there for you.

Tell me your thoughts and if you could date a family member ex if that person was all you need to make you happy.

  • Self Made Boss Book by Jackie Reses & Lauren Weinberg

    Book: Self-Made Boss

Author: Jackie Reses & Lauren Weinberg

    By: Cece Hymes

This Book was for small businesses. It shows you what you need to do to start a small business. It talks about business plans, LLC’s, marketing and more. It had different stories of how people started their business and succeeded in life.

This book had great tips for businesses. As I was reading, I took plenty of notes. Some things I already knew but refreshing my mind was what I needed. I love hearing people’s journeys and testimonies. It gives me the position to keep pushing and some things that stand out that I need to research that I have missed in starting my business.

If you are thinking of starting a business or just getting started this is the right book for you.

  • Reach for the Skai book by Skai Jackson

Book: Reach for the Skai (How to Inspire, Empower, and Clapback)

    Author: Skai Jackson

    By: Cece Hymes

I picked up this book because the words on it caught my attention. I did not know who she was, but my daughter did. It was a good read about her life and her journey. I loved that her mother supported her and pushed her in the right direction, always a good thing to have a great support system. If you do not know who Skai is, she is an actress and played on the show Bunk’d and Jessie.  She created her own fashion line, and a lot of doors have opened for her.

Skai went through a lot especially being in the social media world. Just like everyone else you have your ups and downs in life. These days becoming a celebrity and dealing with social media is hard.  She managed to clapback on some on social media but not in a bad way. Her story will encourage the youth to reach for the sky and follow their dreams.

I wanted my daughter to read the book because I was hoping it would inspire her in a way.  It was good to read about her journey as a little girl and how she got to where she is today.

  • Make It Rain Book By Areva Martin with Donna Beech

    Book: Make It Rain
Author: Areva Martin with Donna Beech
    By: Cece Hymes

Just got finished reading the book “Make It Rain”. This book was about Media and branding. It teaches you how to pitch, network and brand yourself in the media. It was great tips in the book about interviews and getting into those doors. She mentioned a lot of people in the book that have a lot of followers and how they got to where they are on their social platforms. She also let you know not to count social media out. There are millions of people on social media that use the platform every day. Some of the tips that I really highlighted was:
    . Content Strategy
    .Monetizing
.How your content looks on your social media
    .Pitching
    .Trending

Not in that order but some good tips on these topics. I love the name of the book “Make it Rain” because it’s talking business. It’s like promoting yourself and making that money. Even when I see that I think about making those connections, branding, and partnering with the right people. I definitely need to follow more people in my brand and get my social media together. This book is good for people wanting to do interviews, get interviews and get on the news. Check this book out and tell me about your thoughts on it.
