Concert Recap: Stephanie Mills, Karyn White, and After 7 Bring Classic R&B to Stockbridge

There’s something special about summertime concert season. The music, the people, the energy, and those unforgettable moments that remind you why you love being out and about in the city. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend an amazing show at Stockbridge Amphitheater featuring R&B legends Karyn White, After 7, and Stephanie Mills.

Of course, the weather decided it wanted to be part of the show.

A steady rain delayed the concert for about an hour, and while we were all eager to hear the music, I was more focused on my outfit. I had worn a matching set with long pants legs that looked cute when I left the house, but after dragging through puddles and wet pavement, it quickly became a fashion disaster. Between the rain and the walk to the venue, I learned a valuable lesson: always dress for the weather, not just for the photos!

A Pre-Show Tradition

Before heading to the amphitheater, I made a stop at one of my new favorite local spots, Crown Pizza. If you’re attending a show at the amphitheater, this is definitely a place to check out before or after the event.

This was my second time meeting the owner, and just like before, she was welcoming, friendly, and full of positive energy. I also finally got the chance to meet the DJ that I had known by name for quite some time. It’s always funny when you know someone’s reputation but have never actually met them face-to-face. Now I can finally put a face to the name!

Surprise Visits and Backstage Moments

One of the highlights was surprising Karyn White’s manager. We know him personally, so being able to walk up and catch him off guard was a fun moment.

Once the music finally got underway, Karyn White took the stage and immediately reminded everyone why she’s an R&B icon. Her performance was filled with energy, nostalgia, and timeless hits that had the crowd singing along.

Next up was After 7, and they absolutely delivered. What I loved most was how they interacted with the audience. They stepped off the stage, connected with fans, and made everyone feel like part of the show.

Having backstage passes made the experience even more memorable. Being able to see the artists up close and witness everything happening behind the scenes gave me an entirely different appreciation for the production and talent involved.

The Legendary Stephanie Mills

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The legendary Stephanie Mills.

Her voice remains incredible. It’s hard to believe how many years she’s been performing because she still sounds absolutely amazing. From the first note to the last, she captivated the audience and reminded everyone why she’s one of the greats.

Watching an artist with that much history and talent perform live is something every music lover should experience at least once.

Networking, New Connections, and Positive Energy

One thing I’ve always loved about attending events is the opportunity to meet new people and build connections. That’s truly what Cece in the City is all about—discovering experiences while creating meaningful relationships along the way.

I got the chance to meet members of Stephanie Mills’ band, connect with new faces, and enjoy conversations with people who share a passion for music and entertainment.

And of course, I got to spend time with my homegirl, DJ Ms. Eclectic. Every event is better when she’s around. Her energy is always positive, she’s constantly supporting others, and we always seem to have a great time.

A Full-Circle Moment

One of the most meaningful moments of the night happened when I ran into Tamika Scott from Xscape.

Many years ago, when I was just getting started with my magazine, her daughter, Young Niyah, was featured on my very first magazine cover. Interviewing her was such a pleasure and represented an important milestone early in my journey.

Seeing Tamika gave me the opportunity to introduce myself and tell her how much I appreciated the chance to work with her daughter. It felt like a full-circle moment and a reminder of how far I’ve come since those early magazine days.

One More Unexpected Connection

As if the night wasn’t already full of memorable moments, I also shared with Karyn White that I had interviewed her artist, Akbar.

Her response?

“We’ve got to make a video and say hi to him!”

The excitement and genuine warmth in that moment were unforgettable. The energy was authentic, fun, and exactly why I love covering events like these.

Summer Is Here

Rain delays, dirty outfits, legendary performances, backstage access, networking opportunities, and unforgettable conversations—this concert had a little bit of everything.

These are the moments that make Cece in the City what it is: getting outside, experiencing the culture, supporting artists, meeting incredible people, and sharing the journey with all of you.

Summer is officially here, and if this concert is any indication of what’s ahead, we’re in for an amazing season.

Stay tuned because Cece in the City is just getting started.
