The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

For this stop on my 50 States Reading Journey, I picked South Carolina—and what better book to represent it than The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

This one has been sitting on my list for a long time, and I finally got around to it… and I’m glad I did. I’m giving it a solid 4 out of 5 ⭐️.

🌻 A Story Rooted in History & Heart

Set in the 1960s in South Carolina during the Civil Rights era, this novel takes you straight into a time when racism shaped everyday life. But what stood out to me wasn’t just the hardship—it was the strength of community, especially among women.

We follow Lily Owens, a young girl whose life has been shaped by a traumatic childhood memory—the day her mother died when she was just four years old. With only a blurred memory and a few clues left behind (including an image connected to a place), Lily sets out on a journey to uncover the truth about her mother.

And what she finds? Not just answers—but healing, love, and unexpected family.

🐝 Sisterhood Over Everything

One of the most powerful parts of this story is how it flips expectations. In a time when racial division was the norm, this book shows Black women opening their hearts and home to a white girl in need.

That hit me.

It really showed how, even in the hardest times, women leaned on each other, protected each other, and built bonds that went beyond race. The women in this story felt like more than characters—they were guides, protectors… almost like guardian angels.

And it made me think—this is exactly how it should be. Women supporting women, no matter what.

💭 Themes That Stay With You

This book had me reflecting on a few things:

  • How the past shapes us, even when we don’t fully understand it
  • The importance of chosen family
  • The power of forgiveness and healing
  • And most importantly, how life has a way of guiding you exactly where you need to be

That last one? Whew. It stuck with me.

✨ Cece’s Final Thoughts

This was the perfect pick for my South Carolina theme. It gave history, emotion, and a reminder of the power of connection.

Lily’s journey may have started with loss and confusion, but it led her to exactly where she needed to be—and sometimes, that’s how life works for all of us.

If you’re following along with my 50 States Book Journey, this one is definitely worth adding to your list.
