Hey Readers, it’s Wednesday… time for our Book Review!
Today’s pick is The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah — and whew… this one stayed with me.

From the very first pages, this book pulled me into a world that felt both breathtaking and brutal. Set in the wild, untamed landscape of Alaska in the 1970s, the story follows a family trying to start over — but what unfolds is so much deeper than just a fresh start.
❄️ A Story of Survival — In Every Sense
When I think of Alaska, I usually think cold, snow, maybe some cute cabins… but this book? It completely changed that perspective. It dives into the reality of Alaskan life — the extreme darkness in winter, the endless daylight in summer, and the kind of isolation that really tests you.
This wasn’t just about surviving the weather — it was about surviving people, circumstances, and emotions.
You really see how people had to:
- Build their own shelter from nothing
- Hunt and store food to make it through brutal winters
- Adapt mentally to long, dark, lonely seasons
It made me appreciate a whole different level of resilience.
💔 The Emotional Core: Love, Abuse & Hope
What hit me the hardest was the family dynamic — especially the relationship between the mother and father.
There’s this painful reality the book explores: how people can hold onto love even when it’s hurting them.
Watching the mother navigate that space — holding onto hope that things will change — was honestly heartbreaking. It made me stop and think about how often people stay in situations, believing love will eventually fix everything.
At times, I found myself literally saying:
“OMG… no… please don’t…” followed by a quiet little prayer for these characters.
👩👧 A Complicated Mother–Daughter Bond
One of my favorite (and most frustrating) parts of the book was the relationship between mother and daughter.
It wasn’t perfect — and that’s what made it real.
You see:
- Loyalty
- Tension
- Growth
- Moments of both deep love and misunderstanding
It reminded me that relationships, especially between mothers and daughters, can be layered — full of both beauty and conflict.
🤔 My Honest Take
Now listen… I won’t lie — there were some choices in this book that had me side-eyeing HARD. Like… I didn’t agree with everything that happened or how certain characters handled situations.
But honestly? That’s part of what made the book so powerful.
It felt real, not polished or predictable.
✨ Final Thoughts
The Great Alone is a story about:
- Survival
- Strength
- Love (the good and the painful sides of it)
- And never giving up, even when everything feels impossible
It’s emotional, heavy at times, but beautifully written — the kind of book that makes you reflect long after you’ve turned the last page.
